Just like humans crave for healthy nutritious foods, dogs too need nutrition as well. If you have to keep your dog happy, you ought to feed him properly, because “The way to a dog’s heart is through his stomach!” Sadly, there is no predetermined formula as to what a dog should consume and what should be avoided by a dog. Well, in order to keep your dog healthy, here you have a few general guidelines that can be followed.
Commercial dog food
Although it may appear very artificial, yet the foods that are commercially prepared for the dogs and are available readily at the market contain all the nutrition that a dog should have. Almost all the food products available in the market have grains, meat, fruits, vegetables and vitamins. According to the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, “Commercial foods are safe and healthful options for feeding pets.”
The life of a dog can be divided into the following stages:
- Pregnant or nursing
Make sure that the food that you pick for your dog is right for his life stage. There are some foods that are approved for all stages of dogs.
Whenever you go to buy commercial dog foods, do not forget to check the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) mark that says that the food is “complete and balanced”. By ‘complete’ it is meant that the food contains all the essential nutrients that a particular dog requires at that point of time or stage of life. Further, ‘balanced’ denotes that all the nutrients put into the food are in right proportions.
Most of you are confused as to which one is the best – wet food or dry food? Well, both has got their own share of benefits. When considering dry food, know that this is a better option for making your dog’s teeth stronger. On the other hand, the wet food already has moisture contained in it. So, it may help those whose dogs do not drink enough water a day. If you want to know what vets say, you will be surprised. They say that both wet and dry quality dog foods are good for dogs.
Therefore, it is necessary that you take proper care of your dogs if you want them to participate in dog shows and bring home the championship trophy. If other dogs can do it, why yours won’t!
